Introspective English singer-songwriter David Gray is back with him powerful lyrics and a matchless melodic ear After a four-year hiatus Gray released his eighth studio album last month which garnered much praise and peaked at number two on the ‘independent albums’ chart on the Billboard charts.

The much anticipated ‘Draw The Line’ has a total of eleven songs featuring artists like Scottish singer any other huge names? Annie Lennox. The album is a little darker than his previous releases; the lyrics revolve around darker shadows of love and the sinister elements of life. “Well we had to pull on something/ So we’re grabbing at the threads/ Now the world’s unraveling/ Inside our very heads,” sings Gray in the opening of the single ‘Draw The Line’. His somber tone and simple melodies give a pensive mood to the album which is his staple signature. All his albums, especially his most successful ‘White Ladder’ (2000), have always been pensive but the brooding and wisdom that comes with ‘Draw The Line’ is unprecedented for Gray.

The album fuses and blurs the line between folk music and rock; the blend of both works well for Gray and his approach to art or rather his obstacle-filled approach to life.

Dutch DJ Tiësto, rated number two DJ of the year by DJ Mag, seems to have tipped over to the commercial side of the electronic music industry in the wake of the global financial crisis. The recent release of his fourth studio album, ‘Kaleidoscope’ proves to have a significantly different sound to his previous studio releases that have a more progressive trance sound.

His 2004, ‘Just Be’ album was an international sensation, topping charts and reaching the #3 spot on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart. It was followed by ‘Elements of Life’ in 2007 that was also an international success topping the Billboard electronic chart. He was consistent with his sound, loyal to the international techno fan-base he had built.

His trance-driven beats have shifted this time around to accommodate the U.S. palette for pop music and R&B vocals. On this album he has recruited artists like Calvin Harris and Nelly Furtado, both whom have made it big on popular charts in the U.K. and the U.S. respectively. No one song stood out amongst the 17 on the album. Tiësto usually has long electro ballads that weave beats and harmonic waves and has strong vocal trance pieces and yet for this album he tried his best to appeal to the U.S. market leaving regular listeners aghast and confused by the pop-edge the album carries.
